Hospice’s inclusive culture earns silver award
A North East healthcare provider has been nationally recognised for fostering an inclusive workplace culture.
St Oswald’s Hospice earned a Silver Award in the Neurodiversity Employers Index, run by neurodiversity charity Autistica.
The award reflects the hospice’s strong commitment to supporting neurodivergent staff and volunteers, scoring 77 per cent in neurodiversity management.
Initiatives such as workplace adjustments, inclusive culture and new neurodiversity training for managers have contributed to the hospice’s success.
Since forming an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) group in 2019, St Oswald’s Hospice has embedded inclusivity throughout recruitment, training and patient care.
Leigh Marrs, chair of the hospice’s EDI group, said: “We’re working hard to make sure everyone feels safe, valued and able to thrive at work – whatever their background or neurotype.
“Inclusion isn’t just about policies.
“It’s about people, and this award shows we’re moving in the right direction.
“Receiving the Silver Award is something we’re really proud of – but it’s just the beginning.
“We’ll continue listening, learning and taking meaningful steps to create a workplace that truly works for everyone.”
Internal feedback has also shown colleagues feel increasingly supported and confident in requesting necessary adjustments.
The inclusive approach is already making a difference to people across the organisation, including Vickie Howd, a housekeeper at the hospice.
Vickie, who is autistic, explained how practical adjustments have transformed her experience at work.
She said: “I’ve had panic attacks in the past because of sensory overload, but the hospice listened to what I needed.
“I was allowed to work in quieter areas, take sensory breaks and even leave meetings early if they became overwhelming.
“They also helped me get precision-tinted glasses, which made a huge difference.
“I can do my job with far less stress and discomfort now.”
Leigh added: “Hearing from people like Vickie helps us understand what inclusion really looks like – and how we can keep getting better.”
