Newcastle's first 'self service' wine bar opens in dream location
If you love nothing more than trying out a new wine that you've never had the chance to taste before, you're in luck as a new bar has opened in a 'dream' location on the outskirts of Newcastle that has already generated a lot of buzz on social media. And it is even giving its customers the chance to use dispensers to serve themselves.
Back in August 2024 ChronicleLive reported that plans had been submitted for for Angel’s Share to open in the former Boots building on Jesmond’s St George’s Terrace, with the aim of serving up a range of wines, beers and spirits, non-alcoholic refreshments, as well as small plates of food and sharing boards.
The venture has been brought to life by husband and wife team Kate and Daren Knipe, who was formerly managing director of Blackrose Pubs.
After months of a lot of hard work behind the scenes, the couple opened Angel's Share last week, in what they have described as a 'dream' location.
And, as well as having an eclectic menu of food and drink that people can order from, the new venue also has a number of dispensers that allow its customers to serve themselves.
The measures of wine available to self-serve range from 50ml to 250ml and all you need to do for the wine to land in your glass is tap your card and select the size of drink you'd prefer.
Earlier this month, just days before its opening, Kate and Daren took to Angel Share's Facebook page to outline a bit of a mission statement for the business, writing: "Whether you're here to unwind with friends or explore a glass (or two) on your own, you're always in good company.
"We'll be ready to pour, smile, and let you explore the wine list soon.
"We are busy making every last detail just perfect. I have a question for you all: Does "just the one" ever really mean just the one? Or does it quietly become the bottle?"
The landing page on the Angel Share echoses those sentiments, with the description: "Whether you know what you like or you’re just starting to explore, we’ve created a space that’s relaxed, welcoming, and curated with care.
"Browse at your own pace—stick to your favourites, try something new, or let us help you discover something different.
"There’s no pressure here—just good wine, good company, and the knowledge that as long as there’s a glass in your hand and you’re enjoying yourself, we’re doing something right."
