£200 million Crown Square project begins
Work is underway to secure a site earmarked for a £200 million regeneration scheme in central Middlesbrough.
The Crown Square development will transform a derelict site in Gresham into a Fairfield by Marriott hotel, student accommodation and homes for young professionals.
Preparatory groundworks have begun following the installation of hoardings by lead contractor Wates, marking the start of phase one.
This phase includes build-to-rent properties, student housing, and one of the country’s first Fairfield by Marriott hotels.
Developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property are partnering with Middlesbrough Development Corporation to deliver the town’s largest development in generations.
Their ambitious plan aims to create 1500 new homes and 4000 jobs to attract and retain local talent.
Tony Parkinson, chair of the Middlesbrough Development Corporation, said: “This site is primed for regeneration and local people will now be pleased to see activity taking place.
“The Development Corporation continues to liaise closely with our development partners iMpeC and Buccleuch Property – with support from Middlesbrough Council – as we work together to deliver this huge investment which will bring massive benefits to the town.”
Separate works to scaffold The Crown building will reopen the adjacent footpath for pedestrians, while future decisions regarding The Crown will be made by the Development Corporation Board.
