Bishop Wilkinson Trust enters new chapter of leadership
Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, based in Washington, Tyne and Wear, has appointed Lucie Stephenson as acting chief executive, following the retirement of founding chief executive Nick Hurn OBE.
Lucie has served as deputy chief executive and deputy director of education, playing a key role in the Trust’s development into one of the North’s largest Catholic multi-academy trusts.
She brings a strong background in school improvement, leadership development and values-led strategy.
Lucie said: “In recent years, our sector has faced some of its most complex challenges – from national policy changes to the pressures of post-pandemic recovery.
“But in every challenge, we’ve seen the strength of our shared mission.
“Leadership today is not about hierarchy, it’s about listening, supporting, and empowering others.
“As acting chief executive, I commit to leading in this spirit, putting the needs of our pupils, staff, and families first, and working collaboratively to foster an environment where everyone can thrive.
“Looking ahead, my vision is to strengthen our partnerships across schools, families, parishes, and local communities.
“Together, grounded in our Catholic values and servant leadership, we will create safe, nurturing spaces that promote academic excellence, spiritual growth, and personal development.
“Our success isn’t just measured in data – it’s measured in how we treat people, how we support our most vulnerable, and how we grow together.
“I am honoured to serve this Trust and excited to work alongside all stakeholders to ensure that every child flourishes fully in faith and learning.”
Lucie’s appointment signals a new chapter rooted in continuity, community and faith, with a focus on inclusion, high-quality education and staff development across the Trust.
Nick added: “It’s been a privilege to lead the Trust from its inception.
“We originally formed Trinity Trust in 2017, which included seven schools, two secondary schools and five primary schools.
“It was then decided they were going to split the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle into four trusts, and I was asked to take over the Western part of that, which became Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust.
“We quickly transformed from seven over an 18-month period to 47 schools – a mammoth undertaking.
“And from that point, the approach has been phased – first of all conversion, then development stage, then the transformational stage, which is what we're looking at now.
“What started as a vision for stronger collaboration between schools has grown into a thriving, values-led organisation.
“We’ve seen schools improve together, share resources, and become stronger by working as one family. I’m proud of what we’ve built together.
“The Trust is in the best possible hands. Lucie brings not only great expertise, but also the heart and humility that define truly great leadership.
“I leave knowing the mission continues – strong, united, and faithful.”
