OSY and SHARPAK wrap up fruit packaging deal
A tech firm has launched a food sector venture aimed at boosting fruit freshness.
OSY Group is working with packaging maker SHARPAK Aylesham.
Officials say the partnership will see OSY Group apply bacteria-killing technology to SHARPAK’s soft fruit trays to extend the shelf life of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and grapes.
They add Manchester-headquartered OSY Group’s antimicrobial coating leaves microscopic pins on packaging surfaces that slow the natural spoiling process by puncturing and destroying microbes.
Marc Braterman, OSY Group chief executive, said: “We are extremely excited to announce our commercial partnership with SHARPAK.
“It offers the widest range of packaging of soft fruits sold by UK supermarkets, and its packaging is also used for fresh produce and other foods, including meat and poultry.
“Our coating technology is a huge and beneficial differentiator for food producers, retailers and consumers, as it reduces wastage and helps keep food fresher for longer.
“For some products, a one-day extension of shelf life can reduce food waste by up to 50 per cent.”
Martin Taylor, business director at SHARPAK, which is based in Aylesham, near Canterbury, added: “This partnership marks an exciting step forward in packaging innovation.
“Extending the shelf life of soft fruits directly supports waste reduction across the supply chain, which is a growing priority for the entire sector and the consumer.
“This collaboration is a natural next step in continuing to bring meaningful improvements to customers and the wider industry.”
