Karbon strikes gold for green progress
A North East housing provider is being recognised for its environmental progress after making major improvements to its homes and operations.
Newcastle-headquartered Karbon Homes has achieved Gold accreditation from SHIFT (sustainable homes index for tomorrow), the housing sector’s leading environmental standard, after climbing more than 7 per cent year-on-year in its latest sustainability assessment.
The housing association ranked sixth out of 40 similar organisations with a score of 59.74 per cent, with high marks across areas including climate resilience, waste and emissions reduction and energy efficiency.
A significant uplift in the rating of new homes helped drive Karbon’s top-tier score, while the SHIFT report also praised Karbon’s resident engagement, which scored 97 per cent in the review.
Craig Lonsdale, asset and sustainability manager at Karbon Homes, said: “We’re proud to have achieved SHIFT Gold, a recognition that reflects the hard work of our teams and our commitment to building a sustainable future for our customers and communities.
“Karbon actively takes part in the SHIFT assessment as it provides a great strategic framework to monitor and improve the sustainability performance of both our operations and our 34,000 homes across the North East and Yorkshire.
“We know there’s more to do, and our SHIFT 2025 Report gives us a clear roadmap on how we can continue improving.”
Over the next three years, Karbon is committed to investing nearly £13 million in energy efficiency upgrades, bringing almost 1000 lower-performing homes to at least an EPC C standard.
Part of that work will be funded through a £1.87 million Warm Homes grant secured via a regional housing consortium led by Tees Valley Combined Authority.
