A Hole lot of recognition as restaurant makes guide
An acclaimed Durham restaurant has secured a place in one of the UK’s most trusted food guides.
The Rabbit Hole, a Cantonese fusion restaurant in Durham city centre, has earned a slot in Harden’s Guide, which is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading independent voices in dining.
Based entirely on thousands of reviews and ratings from real diners across the country, Harden’s Guide is renowned for spotlighting the “very best in culinary excellence, ambiance and service”.
The Rabbit Hole, based in Hallgarth Street, was originally opened in 2018, with menus and interiors intended to evoke the atmosphere of the dim sum parlours and high-end restaurants of Shanghai.
The establishment underwent a full refurbishment two years ago to add more comfortable seating and larger booths upstairs for more social dining.
The Rabbit Hole is one of only four restaurants in Durham to be featured in this year’s Harden’s Guide and manager Allen Liu said its inclusion marks a significant milestone.
Allen said: “It really means a lot to be recognised by Harden’s, especially knowing it comes directly from the people who dine with us and support what we do.
“It’s a great boost for the whole team.”
The Rabbit Hole is owned by The Zen Group, which includes Zen, Tango and gastropub Whitechurch.
Zak Newton, co-owner with Sam Gadd, added: “This recognition is a real testament to the passion and hard work our team has poured into The Rabbit Hole since day one.
“From the kitchen to the front of house, everyone has gone above and beyond to create something truly special.
“It hasn’t always been easy, but we've all worked hard to make it a success and feel proud that we offer luxury food at affordable prices. Congratulations to Allen and all the team.”
Known for its bold interpretation of Cantonese cuisine, the restaurant serves up a menu of small plates that includes roasted belly pork, short beef rib and hand-crafted dim sum, and elevated versions of traditional Chinese dishes including Dongpo Pork and tamarind glazed sea bass.
