Scrum down for women’s rugby support
A women’s rugby team is calling on local businesses to back the game – and build on the momentum sparked by the Lionesses’ football Euros triumph.
The North East Women’s XV is seeking sponsors for upcoming matches against a US collegiate side, taking place at Durham University on August 20, and at Newcastle Falcons’ Kingston Park on August 29.
The team was created to tackle a lack of visibility and opportunity for women in rugby across the region.
With no women’s premiership club in the North East, many rising stars are forced to leave the area to progress their careers.
Among them is Milly Hyndman, a Teesside University student and aspiring England player, who juggles studies with a demanding training schedule to pursue her passion for rugby.
Francesca Johnson Harding, chair and assistant director of rugby at the North East Women’s XV, said: “To play for their country, young women like Milly, who has proved her worth with her place in the England U20s, need to play club rugby at the highest level.
“However, the North East has no women’s Premiership club.
“As a result, Milly drives from Teesside to Sale three times a week, trains daily at home, works to pay to do that, studies, has a work placement and tries to have a social life!
“She makes a six-hour round trip three times a week, plus the travel to matches just to ensure the talent she has can be seen.”
The showcase fixtures take place as the Women’s Rugby World Cup heads to the Stadium of Light, where England face the USA on August 22.
Supporters hope the matches will boost funding and visibility for women’s rugby – and keep local talent rooted in the region.
Francesca, who also runs kennels Centre Barks, in Sedgefield, added: “Backing a team in sponsorship and helping build a robust dedicated job pool full of athletes is a no-brainer.
“Could your firm be the difference?”
