Brazilian steakhouse sizzles into Sunderland
A North East hospitality group is expanding its reach with a new restaurant in Sunderland.
Rio Brazilian Steakhouse is set to open in the former Halo building on Low Row, near Sunderland Empire.
Co-owners Rodrigo Grassi Duarte and Howard Eggleston have invested £500,000 into transforming the 10,000sq ft venue.
The restaurant promises an immersive experience, inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant culture, featuring tropical décor with planted walls and flowered ceilings that evoke the Tijuca Urban Forest.
Howard said: “The time is most definitely now in Sunderland; we’ve had all eyes on the city and its developing food scene.
“The city is experiencing a vibrant transformation, marked by a surge in culinary delights and developments from The Sheepfolds to Mackie’s Corner and a host of independents.
“The news of our opening has gone down amazingly well; we’ve got an incredible following on social media, and the people of Sunderland have really got behind it.
“We are looking forward to fully immersing ourselves in the city and are already excited to be working on a host of collaborations with partners to make opening night extra special for guests.”
Guests will enjoy the authentic Rodizio dining style, where skilled Gaucho chefs continuously carve premium cuts of meat at the table.
This style is central to the Brazilian Churrasco tradition, offering a unique and interactive dining experience.
Rodrigo added: “With an ever-expanding appetite for bold flavours and fresh ideas in Sunderland, we can’t wait to bring the remarkable Rio Brazilian Steakhouse experience to the city.
“There’s a real energy here – and a real appreciation for food that tells a story.”
The Sunderland site marks the eighth Rio Brazilian Steakhouse for the hospitality group, including sites in Durham, Jesmond and Newcastle’s Quayside.
Its portfolio includes the Tomahawk brand with 11 sites, including the popular Boat Club in Durham.
