Game on for summer safety mission
An energy provider is using gaming to share vital safety advice with young people this summer.
SP Energy Networks has launched an industry-first campaign on Roblox, the UK’s most popular gaming platform for 8 to 14-year-olds.
Two new characters, Engineer Woman and Engineer Man, will feature in video adverts across selected games, encouraging players to join a virtual summer safety mission.
Officials say the campaign aims to raise awareness about real-world electrical hazards, including overhead power lines and substations, using in-game tutorials and rewards such as power-ups to engage players.
Derek Bell, SP Energy Networks health and safety director, said: “It’s really exciting to launch this brilliant collaboration with Roblox and take our safety messages quite literally into the hands of the kids and families we’re trying to reach.
“I’ve no doubt that Engineer Woman and Engineer Man, with a little boost from Roblox, will help create a whole new generation of safety-conscious young people who know what dangers to look out for and how to stay safe around the electricity network.
“I can’t wait to see lots of young people take on our Roblox summer safety mission, join the PowerWise Squad and keep them, their friends and family safe this summer.
“Happy gaming!”
Running for six weeks, the campaign will educate users on how to stay safe outdoors and what to do in an emergency.
The initiative launched at Glasgow’s Riverside Museum, where young visitors got a first look at the characters both on screen and in real life.
Friends Aisling (8), Millie (9) and Rocco (8), from Crookston, enjoyed the preview, saying: “It was good to learn from Engineer Woman and Engineer Man about what we need to do to stay safe and we’re going to tell all our friends to watch the video on Roblox.”
SP Energy Networks manages electricity networks across central and southern Scotland, Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, and North Shropshire.
