Great North Run travel made easy
Runners and spectators in the North East can plan ahead for race day travel as Great North Run wristbands go on sale.
The popular Rover wristbands provide unlimited travel for just £6.50 across Metro, bus and ferry services on Sunday, September 7.
Available via Nexus, the bands are expected to be snapped up quickly as thousands gear up for the iconic half marathon.
The subsidised travel pass, supported by North East mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Combined Authority, helps reduce congestion and simplify journeys on the day.
Extra Metro services and special shuttle buses will be in operation to support smooth travel across the region.
Mayor McGuinness said: “The Great North Run is a huge day for our region when we welcome thousands upon thousands of spectators and runners from around the world.
“We are funding affordable and convenient travel for local people and visitors alike so you can buy one handy wristband that lets you use any Metro, Shields Ferry or bus route throughout the day.
“This is all part of making sure the Great North Run is a great experience for everyone who takes part, watches or volunteers on the day.
“I’ll be running again this year for local charities, so I look forward to seeing thousands of my fellow runners putting the Rover wristbands to good use.”
Wristbands are available online until August 29 and will be mailed out ahead of the event.
Alternatively, a paper ticket version can be bought at Metro ticket machines from August 11.
The Shields Ferry will run a frequent, cash-free service using both vessels.
Helen Mathews, commercial director at Nexus, added: “The Great North Run Rover wristbands are ideal for anyone taking part in the event, offering unlimited travel on Metro, buses and the Shields Ferry in a no-fuss format.
“For runners and spectators alike, they offer flexibility and will save you time in the queue when it is really busy.
“If you’re a runner, then you don’t need to worry where your travel ticket is after the race.”
