Hospice urges supporters to ‘Say Yes’

A Middlesbrough-based charity is asking Tees Valley residents to back its latest summer campaign.

Teesside Hospice has launched its seasonal appeal to raise vital funds by encouraging the public to ‘Say Yes’ – a nod to the many times staff have said yes to supporting patients and families in need.

The hospice, which provides specialist care for people with life-limiting illnesses, supports more than 3000 individuals every year through services including its In-Patient Unit, wellbeing centre, Lymphoedema Clinic and bereavement support.

It costs £6.75 million annually to run the hospice, with over 70 per cent of that total reliant on charitable donations.

Scott Hill, individual giving manager at Teesside Hospice, said: “At Teesside Hospice, we really do try to go above and beyond for every person who uses our services, whether it’s taking a patient to the Transporter Bridge to fulfil a final wish, helping to arrange a marriage blessing here at the hospice, or calling on classic car owners to come and visit a fan who was staying in our In-Patient Unit.

“Our nurses and staff say ‘yes’ to these requests every single day and want to continue to do so – but we can’t do that without the supporters who say ‘yes’ to us.

“We’re calling out to the people of Teesside to continue their generosity and ‘Say Yes’ this summer, whether that’s through signing up to take on a challenge or event, donating to the hospice, shopping in our retail stores or volunteering.

“Any support you can give is invaluable, as it means we can continue to provide these special moments for those who use our services.”

The campaign shares stories of staff going above and beyond for patients, including the experience of Janet Gardener, whose husband Jeremy was cared for at the hospice in 2024.

Janet said: “Jeremy was referred to the hospice once he’d been given a short prognosis.

“We moved ourselves into Jeremy’s room and it became a home from home, and the staff became extended family.

“And we were loved, we were cared for, and we spent two weeks living in a bubble of loveliness.

“None of us want to need that, but if you do need it, it is the most precious thing in the world.”
