County Durham prepares to mark VJ Day

To commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War, Durham County Council is hosting a series of free activities at The Story, its culture and heritage venue at Mount Oswald House on the outskirts of Durham City.

Taking place on Friday, August 15, the VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) programme includes a two-minute silence, a commemorative film screening, a Second World War military demonstration by the Old 68th Society and a family print workshop.

Visitors can also explore poems of remembrance and view artefacts such as a Japanese soldier’s helmet from the Battle of Kohima and a drawing by a Durham Light Infantry member.

In addition to events at The Story, County Hall will fly a special Union flag throughout the week, while the building itself will be lit in red, white and purple to mark the occasion.

The council has also waived road closure fees for residents hosting VJ Day street parties and created a downloadable information pack to help communities plan their own tributes.

The commemorations aim to honour those who fought in the Far East, including many soldiers from County Durham, whose contributions are often less recognised.

Councillor Andrew Harrison, Durham County Council’s armed forces champion, said: “VE Day is a date that is widely celebrated across the UK and Europe, which is how it should be.

“However, the Second World War did not end on 8 May 1945.

“It was a further three months before Japan surrendered and, during this time, service personnel continued to fight to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.

“That’s why VJ Day is equally important; it’s a chance to honour those who fought in the Far East and demonstrate our enduring gratitude for the sacrifices they made.”

All activities are free and no booking is required. Entry to The Story and parking at the venue are also free.
