Maritime insurer sails into new North East base
A maritime insurer is expanding with a new office.
UK P&I Club is opening a base in Newcastle.
Officials say the move will strengthen the shipowner, charterer and offshore operator insurance provider’s international reach by “capitalising on the city’s impressive pool of graduate and existing protection and indemnity talent”.
Its North East team includes senior underwriting director Emma Liddell and senior claims executives Julie Pichler and Andrew North, with bosses recruiting for a further senior claims executive.
Lisa Gibbard, chief operating officer at UK P&I Club, which already complements a London office with further sites across Europe, North America and East Asia, said: “Our North East expansion means we are well positioned to access a broader talent pool, from seasoned professionals to new graduates.
“Investing in our Newcastle office also enables us to participate more actively in the region’s diverse maritime industry, complementing our networks in London and internationally.
“This development reiterates our commitment to bringing in the best people, while complementing our heritage and continued presence in the City of London.”
Paul Jennings, managing director at Newcastle-headquartered global maritime insurer NorthStandard, applauded UK P&I Club's move.
He said: “The North East has a rich history as a global centre for marine insurance, and we welcome the UK P&I Club’s decision to strengthen its local presence in Newcastle.
“This decision acknowledges the vital role the region’s maritime professionals play in maintaining the flow of world shipping.
“With a heritage spanning over 160 years in the North East, we are proud to call the region home.”
