Dylan helps education hub rebuild - days after leaving
A teenager is set to help transform an education hub – just days after leaving its corridors.
Dylan Hughes will support multi-million-pound work to deliver Cramlington Learning Village.
The 18-year-old has been recruited as an apprentice site engineer by construction and development firm Bowmer+Kirkland.
Set for completion in 2027, bosses say the scheme will create a three-storey, L-shaped building next to the current school, which will provide space for more than 2000 students and nearly 200 staff.
Four existing buildings will be retained, with nine older structures primed for demolition.
Dylan is one of 20 former school students to secure a degree apprenticeship, and will split his time between site work and studying civil engineering at Northumbria University.
“Ever since primary school I’ve loved maths, and I loved physics when I moved to secondary school,” said Dylan, who picked up A and B grades in the subjects during recent A-level exams.
He added: “I wanted to do something that would combine them both.
“When I started sixth form, I was unsure about what I wanted to do, but I never wanted to go to university because of the debt.”
Ken Brechin, head of sixth form at Cramlington Learning Village, added: “Dylan has been a fantastic student, and it will be great to see him back here in his new role.
“We wish him – and all our other leavers – the best of luck.”
