Selby Cottage earns Outstanding rating

A County Durham childcare centre is celebrating after being rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

Selby Cottage Childcare Centre, in Chester-le-Street, received the top grade following its latest inspection, with inspectors praising passionate staff, inspiring leadership and its safe, welcoming environment.

The centre, run by Durham County Council, was commended for offering a wide range of engaging activities, from a mud kitchen and allotment to visits to swimming pools, forest schools and community hubs.

Children’s behaviour was found to be “exemplary,” with staff encouraging respect, teamwork and kindness.

Inspectors also found support for language and communication development to be “exceptional,” noting that babies were highly engaged.

The report described staff as motivated and dedicated, while the leadership team was recognised for its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care and education, alongside a strong focus on staff wellbeing.

Lisa Fenwick, manager of Selby Cottage Childcare Centre, said: “We’re delighted to receive an Outstanding rating from Ofsted and are especially pleased that the inspectors highlighted what a happy place this is for children, parents and staff.

“We want every child who comes here to thrive, learn valuable life skills and be happy, confident and curious about the world around them.

“I’m so proud of the team for this achievement and would like to thank them for their dedication.

“I’d also like to thank our amazing children and parents who make coming to work such a pleasure.”

The Outstanding grade follows Selby Cottage’s previous inspection in 2019, when it was rated Good with some Outstanding features.

Councillor Cathy Hunt, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services, added: “I would like to congratulate the entire Selby Cottage team on this fantastic Ofsted result, which is testament to the hard work, passion and care they demonstrate every day.

“Selby Cottage is a place where children are given the best start in life, with support to develop their language and communication skills and opportunities to socialise and make friends in a safe and nurturing space.

“We’re absolutely committed to supporting the team to continue delivering this excellent standard of care.”
