UK’s largest battery storage site goes live

A new clean energy project in the South East is set to strengthen the UK’s electricity network with the launch of a landmark battery storage facility.

Thurrock Storage, developed by Statera Energy, has officially gone live as the UK’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS).

The 300MW site, capable of delivering 600MWh, can supply enough instantaneous power for up to 680,000 homes for two hours.

Positioned close to London, it provides rapid response capacity to stabilise the grid and support energy security at times of high demand.

John Twomey, National Grid Electricity Transmission’s (NGET) director of customer and network development, said: “Battery storage plays a vital role in Britain’s clean energy transition.

“Connecting Thurrock Storage, the UK’s biggest battery, to our transmission network marks a significant step on that journey.

“Our Tilbury substation once served a coal plant, and with battery connections like this, it’s today helping to power a more sustainable future for the region and the country.”

The development sits alongside Statera’s flexible generation plant in Thurrock and marks a key step in transforming the area’s legacy from coal power to clean energy.

As well as underpinning the low-carbon transition, bosses say the facility will create new jobs and apprenticeships locally.

Tom Vernon, Statera Energy chief executive and founder, added: “We are delighted that Thurrock Storage is now energised, following its successful connection to the grid by NGET.

“Increasing BESS capacity is essential for supporting the grid when renewable generation, such as solar and wind, is low or changes quickly.

“It ensures that energy can be stored efficiently and returned to the grid whenever it’s needed.”
