Cycle lane row ends as removal begins
A long-disputed transport scheme in Middlesbrough is finally being dismantled following widespread opposition from local businesses and residents.
The Linthorpe Road Cycleway, introduced to encourage more sustainable travel in the town, faced years of criticism from traders who argued it damaged footfall and created safety concerns.
After pledging to take action, Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen and Middlesbrough mayor Chris Cooke confirmed work is now under way to remove the route.
Contractor Esh Construction has begun initial preparations, with more visible works expected in the coming weeks.
The decision followed a public consultation by Tees Valley Combined Authority last year, which revealed that more than two-thirds of respondents supported its removal.
Mayor Houchen said: “This cycleway has been nothing but a headache for businesses on Linthorpe Road, a barrier for pedestrians, and just a bad project all round for Middlesbrough from the start.
“It’s not worked. I pledged to get it pulled up – and it’s a relief to finally see that promise being delivered.
“This sorry saga has dragged on far too long and I share people’s frustrations.
“It’s good that a reputable firm in Esh is on the job.
“This gives businesses some certainty at last – and lessons simply must be learned from this mess to ensure these mistakes are never repeated.
“Now the focus must be on getting this ripped up and sorted quickly, properly, and safely so we can realise our big plans to breathe new life into Middlesbrough town centre.”
Middlesbrough Council formally approved the change in February, although some elements of the scheme will remain in place on safety grounds, including closures at Victoria Road and King Edward’s Square.
Mayor Cooke added: “The people of Middlesbrough told me that they wanted rid of the cycle lane on Linthorpe Road and I pledged that if I was elected as mayor, it would go.
“This was a scheme that has never worked out and has caused too many issues for businesses and others using our town centre.
“It's taken a long time to get here but I am delighted that thanks to a lot of hard work, we can finally draw a line under this.
“I'm looking forward to seeing work progressing.”
