Plans backed for 124-extra care apartment scheme
Plans have been approved for a 124-apartment scheme.
South Tyneside Council has backed a South Shields extra care housing blueprint.
The project will be delivered by Karbon Homes alongside the local authority on the site of the former Chuter Ede School and Ede Community Association.
Bosses say it will “help people with differing levels of care and support needs to live well and independently for longer”, adding 25 apartments will cater specifically for people with dementia.
Robertson Construction North East has been appointed lead contractor, with JDDK Architects supporting the design of the four-storey scheme, which will include multi-use community spaces, a bistro café and environmental features such as air source heat pumps and roof-mounted solar panels.
Zoey Hawthorne, Karbon Homes’ assistant director of development delivery, said: “It’s great to have the backing of the South Tyneside Council planning committee to bring this exciting, much-needed scheme to fruition.
“This project represents a major commitment from us to provide affordable, high-quality homes in the borough.”
Councillor Tracey Dixon, leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “We continue to invest in affordable accommodation that reflects the needs and wants of our communities, and allows people to live with dignity and independence.
“I’m really looking forward to watching this new facility take shape.”
The project will be part-funded by Homes England through Karbon’s partnership with the Government’s housing delivery agency.
