Freemason to push limits for Alzheimer’s research
A North East runner is preparing to push his endurance to the limit with a gruelling ultramarathon challenge in memory of his mother.
Gosforth-based Guy Smith, a Freemason and experienced ultramarathon runner, will cover 200 miles in just four days this September, visiting every Masonic Temple across Northumberland.
His effort will raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a cause close to his heart following the loss of his mother to the disease earlier this year.
Guy said: “Mum touched so many lives and losing her so quickly to Alzheimer’s was devastating.
“Anyone who has witnessed it knows how cruel it is.
“That’s why I’ve chosen Alzheimer’s Research UK as the beneficiary of this challenge.
“My fundraising target is £3000, and I’ve already raised nearly £5000.”
The challenge begins on September 2 at Berwick Masonic Hall, with Guy setting off directly after attending a lodge meeting.
His route will take him down the coast, through North Tyneside and along the Tyne Valley, before finishing in Haltwhistle.
The following day he will join thousands at the Great North Run to round off his week of running.
Guy added: “I’ve mapped it at around 197 miles, but with fatigue, navigation challenges and the inevitable detours, it will break the 200-mile mark.
“I’ll be running through day and night, grabbing power naps where I can.
“It’s going to be tough, but I know why I’m doing it.”
Guy is no stranger to extreme endurance, having previously completed multiple marathons and ultramarathons, including the 100-mile Castle-to-Castle race from Bamburgh to Edinburgh.
However, this latest challenge will test both his physical and mental strength as he combines his passions for running and Freemasonry while supporting vital dementia research.
He added: “It might sound mad, but running has given me purpose, better health and a way to give back.
“This is about honouring Mum, raising awareness, and hopefully inspiring others to push themselves for a cause they care about.”
