Pub falls in council regeneration plan
A fire-damaged pub is being razed to the ground in local authority regeneration plans.
Durham County Council is demolishing the former Chilton Country Pub and Hotel.
Bosses say the work on the site – based on the outskirts of Chilton Moor – will “open up opportunities for it to be redeveloped for the benefit of the community”.
The authority has used powers under the Town and Country Planning Act, with funding from the Towns and Villages Vulnerable Buildings Project, which aims to revive vacant units and spaces.
Councillor Andrew Husband, leader of Durham County Council, said: “The site has been accessible to the public, which has led to vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
“Its condition has also resulted in a long-term road closure, which is affecting public rights of way.
“We have been seeking ways to make the site secure without success, and have now taken formal action to resolve the issue.”
Demolition work is expected to be completed over the coming weeks.
