Funding to fast-track health solutions
A research centre is set to benefit from major investment to drive innovation across the UK’s health and life sciences sector.
Newcastle University has secured £22 million from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to support the NIHR Innovation Observatory over the next five years.
Officials say the funding, which begins in April 2026 and builds on almost a decade of NIHR backing, will help identify new medicines, diagnostics, devices and digital technologies to transform healthcare and reduce inequalities.
They add it will also expand the Observatory’s methods and infrastructure while strengthening international collaborations, supporting smaller businesses and smoothing the path for innovative solutions to reach patients faster.
Professor Dawn Craig, director of the NIHR Innovation Observatory, said: “We are delighted to have been successful in this competitive funding award.
“The award will further enhance our ability to turn data into rapid, actionable insights – driving smarter decisions, faster innovation adoption and deeper collaboration with industry and national partners.
“By strengthening our analytical capabilities and fostering cross-sector partnerships, we are not only looking to improve care but also to play a role in positioning the UK as a global leader in health tech and innovation-driven growth.”
By working closely with Government departments, regional stakeholders, industry, charities and SMEs, the Observatory will deliver early insights to guide policy, investment and regulation, helping accelerate the adoption of groundbreaking technologies and keeping the UK at the forefront of global life sciences.
Its work already spans transformative areas such as artificial intelligence, bio-engineering, genomics, wearable technology and antimicrobial resistance monitoring.
