Council urges residents to Catch the Bus
Residents in County Durham are being encouraged to make the most of discounted bus travel this September.
Durham County Council, supported by bus operators Arriva and Weardale Travel, is backing Catch the Bus Month, a nationwide campaign highlighting how buses reduce congestion, cut pollution and support the local economy.
The county is offering a range of subsidised fares, including the £5 Durham Day Rover ticket for unlimited same-day travel and the Get Round scheme, with £1 single fares and £3 day tickets for those aged 21 and under.
All single fares are capped at £2.50.
The campaign also promotes Car Free Days Out, offering discounts at regional attractions for those travelling by bus.
Pop-up events will run across Bishop Auckland, Shildon, Ushaw and Chester-le-Street to raise awareness of the initiative and encourage sustainable travel.
Councillor Stephen Gray, Durham County Council cabinet member, said: “We recognise the important role buses play in connecting our communities.
“They also boost the economy by bringing people into our towns and villages and help to improve the local environment by reducing congestion and air pollution.
“This September, we’re working with our partners at NECA and with bus operators across the region to raise awareness of these vital services and some of the great value fare options available.
“Catch the Bus Month isn’t just about riding the bus, it’s about driving change, and we are proud to be supporting it.”
