North East firm powers heat pump surge

A North East start-up is set to expand UK clean heating support.

Mutha Cuva, a climate tech business founded by heating entrepreneur Amy Mooney, has secured half of its £250,000 pre-seed funding just weeks after launch.

The investment comes from regional backers keen to support a national servicing network for heat pumps, positioning the North East at the heart of the UK’s clean energy transition.

Amy says the funding will accelerate local hiring, technology development and expansion of its servicing network, keeping operations rooted in the North East.

She said: “There’s a perception that serious climate tech needs to be built in the capital.

“But the North East has the talent, the networks and the appetite to back real innovation.

“That’s where the momentum is coming from and it’s where this business belongs.”

Mutha Cuva addresses a growing challenge: reliable aftercare for low-carbon heating systems.

With gas boilers banned in new-build homes under the Future Homes Standard and a target of 600,000 annual heat pump installations by 2028, the UK faces a shortfall of at least 20,000 trained engineers.

Mutha Cuva’s platform offers automated bookings, remote monitoring and AI-powered engineer support across all heat pump models.

Among those backing the venture are angel investor and serial entrepreneur James Robson MBE, and Graham Robb, founder of Recognition PR and former North East chair of the Institute of Directors.

James, who has decades of experience scaling industrial ventures, is also advising on operational strategy and growth.

He added: “Amy’s model is built on practical insight and a clear understanding of what’s holding the market back.

“She’s solving a problem that’s already affecting thousands of households.

“The North East is the right place to build this business, and the right place to lead the transition.”

Graham, whose firm has supported hundreds of high-growth businesses, added: “Amy’s approach is commercially sharp and rooted in the realities of the sector.

“She’s enabling engineers to upskill and homeowners to get the service they need - and she’s doing it from the North East, not in spite of it.”
