Union veteran closes the door on 48 years
A Leeds-based manufacturing company is celebrating the retirement of one of its longest-serving employees after nearly five decades of service.
Union Industries, the employee-owned specialist in bespoke industrial doors, has bid farewell to Richard Balmforth, who joined the firm in 1977 and went on to become a master craftsman in fabric engineering.
Starting out as “a pair of hands” on the shopfloor, Richard built a career that saw him play an integral role in the company’s growth from a handful of staff to a nationally recognised manufacturer.
His colleagues marked the occasion with a party in his honour, sharing memories and stories from his long career.
Andrew Lane, managing director at Union Industries, which supplies major names in food production, retail and logistics, said: “It was wonderful to bring the Union family together to celebrate such a remarkable milestone for one of our longest-standing colleagues.
“Richard has been with Union since the very early days and has played a key role in the company’s growth and success.
“He leaves behind some very big shoes to fill, and while we will certainly miss seeing him around, his contribution and legacy will remain a lasting part of Union’s story.”
Richard added: “I’ll certainly miss everyone here. I’ve spent the majority of my life alongside so many fantastic colleagues, and it’s been a real privilege to watch both them and the company grow over the years.
“I’ve already told the team that I’m only ever a phone call away if they need a hand with anything.”
