Redcar’s historic boating lake reopens
A town’s iconic waterside attraction has been brought back to life following restoration work.
Redcar’s 100-year-old Boating Lake, a long-standing favourite for locals and visitors, has undergone specialist repairs to address extensive cracking in its concrete basin.
Covering more than 2800 metres, the labour-intensive restoration involved hand repairs and the use of cofferdams to isolate sections for precise work.
Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council confirmed that, after thorough testing, the lake is now holding water successfully and has officially reopened to the public.
Councillor Alec Brown, leader of the Council, said: “We’re proud to have brought the much-loved, 100-year-old Boating Lake back to life for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and support while the specialist contractor carried out the repairs.
“It wasn’t a straightforward job due to the history and the size of the lake, but it’s fantastic to see that the works have been a success, and the contractor has done a fantastic job.
“Coatham seafront continues to thrive, with exciting additions in recent years including a mini golf course, Beach Base and a children’s play park.
“It’s a vibrant destination that hosts events and welcomes visitors all year round.
“The Boating Lake serves as a centrepiece for the positive transformation taking place around it.
“We’re thrilled to see it filled with water once again, ready for the community to enjoy.”
