Digger maker breaks ground with new models
A digger maker says it has carved foundations for growth after bolstering North East production lines.
Komatsu UK is set to manufacture two new machines at its factory in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street.
Officials say the “world-leading” excavators have the potential to “revolutionise the construction industry”.
Revealing interest in the diggers – known as the PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 models – is already “very high”, they add the machines will offer “extreme fuel efficiency, ultra-low emissions and the highest levels of digitalisation”.
Stuart Reid, Komatsu UK managing director, said: “I’m delighted to secure manufacture of these incredible new excavators for Birtley.
“They have market-leading features, and we are excited to be launching them onto the European market.
“We will be working hard in the coming months to meet initial demand.”
Gary Yeaman, general manager – manufacturing, added: “It’s a testament to the skill, innovation and dedication of the Komatsu UK employees that we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
