Retail landmark closes for redevelopment
A North Yorkshire town centre is set for a new chapter following the closure of a historic retail site.
Brunswick Centre in Scarborough has closed after more than 30 years, marking the end of its life as the town’s first fully enclosed shopping centre.
Long-serving management and security staff joined colleagues from Scarborough Group International (SGI) to symbolically switch off the lights.
The site has a rich retail history.
Originally home to Rowntree’s department store in 1882, it later became Debenhams before the building was demolished in 1988 to make way for the Brunswick Centre, which opened in 1990.
Over the decades it hosted national chains and local retailers, attracting millions of visitors.
The centre’s closure reflects wider changes in retail, including the rise of online shopping and shifting consumer habits.
SGI has worked with tenants to support relocations, helping to sustain activity on the high street, while the redevelopment will form a key part of Scarborough’s wider regeneration strategy, shaping its future for residents and visitors.
Rachel Vickers, senior commercial manager at SGI, said: “Brunswick has meant so much to the people who worked here and the community it served.
“Turning out the lights together was our way of saying thank you, to reflect on its place in Scarborough’s story and to recognise the dedication of the team behind it.
“Like many town centres across the UK, Scarborough faces challenges.
“Redeveloping this site gives us the chance to bring new energy and purpose to the high street, and to create a place local people can feel proud of once again.”
