Durham uncorks authentic Sicilian flavours
A new wine bar has opened in Durham, bringing authentic Italian food and drink to the city.
Located at The Riverwalk, Veeno is serving up a true taste of Sicily with Italian aperitivo, spuntini, artisan meats and cheeses, fresh pasta, pizzas and classic cocktails.
Husband-and-wife duo Dan and Donna Lewis are bringing the venue to life, having taken over the franchise from founders Nino Caruso and Rodrigue Trouillet, who run five other Veeno sites across the UK.
Guests can enjoy wines from Caruso & Minini, Nino’s family vineyard, alongside a curated selection from small, independent Italian producers.
Signature experiences include A Trip to Sicily – pairing six family wines with a spuntini board and traditional tiramisu – plus Italian Afternoon Tea and guided wine-tasting journeys.
Dan said: “It’s been a hard few months getting everything ready – from transforming the venue to building a fantastic new team – but we’re finally here.”
Donna added: “We fell in love with the Veeno story, the authenticity of the food and drink, and the traditions behind them.
“Now, we can finally share that passion with the people of Durham and beyond.
“At Veeno, every glass reflects the heart of Sicily – vibrant, refined and shaped by generations of winemaking tradition.
“Each bottle carries the story of Nino’s family heritage, the warmth of sun-soaked vineyards and a deep respect for the land that produces them.”
To celebrate the opening, visitors until September 30 can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, with one lucky guest winning a trip for two to Sicily to visit the Caruso & Minini estate.
