Se Gæst to explore community and identity
A theatre production is set to tour the North East, exploring identity, belonging and community.
Se Gæst | The Guest will perform at North Shields’ iconic Fish Quay on October 25, with a wider tour (see dates below) across the North East running until December 11.
Created by acclaimed choreographer and theatre-maker Anthony Lo-Giudice, the production fuses dance, live music and storytelling to examine what it means to belong in a changing nation.
The narrative follows a young boy who washes ashore in England, prompting a community to confront questions of tolerance, blame, nostalgia and national identity.
Drawing on interviews and conversations from across England, the piece blends personal stories with bold political themes, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own place in society.
Anthony said: “This work is about listening – to the uncomfortable, the conflicted and the tender truths of what it means to be from somewhere, or to arrive there.
“Through movement, story and music, we’re asking: who do we become when we stand together?”
The performance on October 25 will feature a special pre-show presentation by Mouths of the Tyne Community Choir, North Tyneside Youth Dance and Helix Arts’ Falling on Your Feet dance company.
This intergenerational cast of 50 performers, aged 8 to 85, will premiere This Boat Must Hold Us All, a piece developed by composer Bridie Jackson and Anthony, incorporating original lyrics and movement inspired by the region’s cultural identity and coastal landscapes.
Tickets for the North Shields performance are available via Eventbrite, priced at £15 (+£1.96 booking fee).
Proceeds will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and The Fishermen’s Mission.
