New funding aims to widen cultural access

Tees Valley cultural attractions are set to welcome more visitors with a new support programme.

The “Unlocking Access” initiative offers funding of up to £10,000 to museums, galleries, theatres, music venues and visitor attractions to improve accessibility and attract new audiences.

Participating venues can access staff and volunteer training, accessibility audits, scoping visits and grants to make upgrades.

Eligible improvements include minor capital works such as widened doorways, improved signage, upgraded bathrooms and the purchase of ramps, hearing loops or sensory packs.

Digital accessibility enhancements, including WCAG-compliant websites and pre-visit information, are also supported.

Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Tees Valley Combined Authority, the programme aims to boost visitor numbers, improve inclusivity, and increase revenue.

Councillor Brenda Harrison, Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet lead for creative place, said: “Accessibility should never be an afterthought – it’s central to ensuring that everyone can experience and enjoy what our fantastic cultural and visitor attractions have to offer.

“This programme will give venues the tools, knowledge and funding they need to make meaningful changes, creating more inclusive spaces for residents, staff and visitors.

“I’d urge venues and business to get in touch, and I look forward to hearing how the changes help to reach new audiences and create more accessible venues.”

Applications are open until October 6. For more information, see here.
