Bridge funding paves way for new crossing
A historic Durham crossing is set to benefit from multi-million-pound investment to secure its future and improve local transport links.
Baths Bridge, which dates back to 1898 and connects Pelaw Leazes Lane and Elvet Waterside, will be replaced by Durham County Council thanks to up to £6.2 million from the North East Combined Authority’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, alongside £1.3 million from the Consolidated Active Travel Fund.
Officials say the new structure will reflect the city’s heritage while enhancing connections across the River Wear, with work expected to start in 2026.
Alongside the bridge project, £16 million of funding from the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) has been allocated to boost services across the county.
Proposals include timetable improvements, cheaper fares, new park and ride sites and better waiting facilities to make buses a more affordable and practical alternative to using private cars.
Councillor Tim McGuinness, Durham County Council cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “We are pleased to receive the funding from the North East Combined Authority for Baths Bridge, which will protect this vital, and historic, connection in Durham City for future generations.
“Meanwhile, the additional funding from the Bus Service Improvement Plan is a welcomed boost for the bus services and another big step towards delivering a reliable, affordable and practical public transport network for County Durham residents.”
