Student's innovation gains national recognition
A North East student has gained national recognition for his cyber security innovation.
Middlesbrough cyber security student Rahim Ul Islam, 20, developed SKYNET AI while studying at Teesside University.
The tool automates ethical hacking, using artificial intelligence to identify weaknesses in IT systems and help protect data from cyber-attacks.
Rahim’s innovation was first recognised in Teesside University’s Big Ideas Challenge, supported by the business education charity ESBF.
Following that success, Rahim has now been shortlisted for the national Champion of Champions Competition, where he will compete against nine other university teams from across the UK.
Rahim said: “Cyber-attacks are getting more common, and the impacts are getting worse, with some causing bankruptcy to companies.
“SKYNET AI can build a more secure world by giving everyone access to a cyber security professional 24/7 and 365 days of the year.
“I didn’t expect to be chosen at all, but it means a lot.
“It shows that there is interest in my business idea and can give me support to make this into a business.
“I’m very excited to meet the other finalists.
The grand final, hosted by TV presenter and engineer Rob Bell, will take place at the Royal Academy of Engineering on November 7, with a £17,000 prize pot up for grabs.
Winners will also receive mentoring from business leaders who are members of the Sainsbury Management Fellows network, plus CV packages from PurpleCV and entrepreneurial books from sponsors to support the continued development of their ideas.
Scott Watson, enterprise manager at Teesside University, added: “Having worked as a university with ESBF for the past couple of years, we are absolutely delighted that Rahim has been shortlisted for the Champion of Champions Competition.
“His idea looks to be game-changer in terms of helping those without the skills, resources or budget to build a robust cyber security infrastructure for themselves.
“We’d like to wish Rahim the very best of luck at the grand final.”
