Mayor visits Teesside firm powering clean growth
Teesside engineering firm Sulzer Chemtech recently hosted Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen at its Middlesbrough facility.
The multinational specialist, which opened its state-of-the-art site at Tees Advanced Manufacturing Park (TeesAMP) in 2020, provides cutting-edge services in chemical processing and separation technologies.
The visit showcased the company’s growing capabilities and in-house training programmes for local technicians.
Courses cover areas such as confined space entry, weld overlay and repair training, ensuring staff are equipped with skills for both local and international projects.
The firm recently secured work on the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project at Teesworks, a landmark initiative jointly led by bp and Equinor.
Sulzer will design, manufacture and supply proprietary internals for the plant’s carbon capture unit, supporting the world’s first gas-fired power station with integrated carbon capture.
Once operational, the plant will deliver up to 740 megawatts of low-carbon power, enough for more than one million homes annually and capture up to two million tonnes of CO₂ each year for offshore storage in the North Sea.
Mayor Houchen said: “It was a real pleasure to see some of the brilliant training facilities Sulzer have to offer right here on Teesside – and it’s brilliant they’ve secured work on NZT Power to provide more well-paid jobs to local people.
“It’s also great to hear the activity the company has seen is allowing them to take on apprentices for the first time in Sulzer Chemtech’s UK history.
“Sulzer is a great example of a company both showing and backing our strengths in engineering and chemical processing – and I’m proud of the number of Teessiders they have on their books flying the flag for our region right around the globe.
“I look forward to seeing Sulzer’s work take shape on the NZT site as work ramps up at Redcar.”
Sulzer’s Middlesbrough site forms part of a global network of 180 manufacturing facilities and service centres, with employees from Teesside contributing to projects around the world.
The company provides maintenance, repair, upgrade, and revamp services for separation units, mass transfer components and waste-to-energy boilers, serving refining, chemical processing and power sectors internationally.
Brett Armer, head of tower field service, Europe Caspian and Africa, at Sulzer Chemtech, added: “Sulzer is extremely proud to have been selected for the Net Zero Teesside Carbon Capture facility, demonstrating that our world class carbon capture technology, installation and maintenance services are market-leading.
“We are growing our business, with our highly trained staff here in Teesside, and we are using these skills to develop business not only in the local area but supporting our operations globally.”
