New multi-storey car park opens in Gateshead
A new multi-storey car park is now open for business in Gateshead.
The Quays multi-storey car park on Quays Boulevard offers over 1000 spaces, making it one of the largest parking facilities in the area.
The £23 million development also includes 50 electric vehicle charging bays – the highest number in the local area – alongside 45 large accessible spaces, ensuring the site caters to a wide range of drivers.
Commissioned to meet future parking demand linked to the Gateshead Quays development and wider regional growth, the building uses the latest technology for convenience and security.
Drivers can pay via the PayByPhone app, while high-definition CCTV monitors the facility and 550 rooftop solar panels generate 220kW of clean electricity annually.
Parking charges align with other nearby council car parks, at £2.60 for up to two hours or £5.70 for a full day.
EV charging is priced at 66 pence per kilowatt hour, with infrastructure in place to expand the number of charging bays as demand increases.
Season ticket permits are also available, with options for three-month or annual use, while longer-term management of the facility may be contracted to a specialist private operator in the future.
The project was funded through Gateshead Council’s capital programme with a £2.8m contribution from the Government’s Getting Building Fund, which was administered by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NE LEP), now part of the North East Combined Authority.
Councillor Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council officially opened the building and then took a tour to see what the public can expect.
He said: “This is a hugely impressive facility, and it’s going to be so important to help grow the economy in this part of the borough.
“We remain hugely ambitious to develop land on Gateshead Quays, and in the Baltic Quarter – and this car park means we have capacity for developments as they come on stream.
“When you see the view from the top floor, you realise it’s a great location – just a few minutes from BALTIC and the Glasshouse, and then you have all the offices, hotels and Gateshead College too.
“We encourage people to use the most appropriate mode of transport for their journey, so the car park is one part of the transport mix – Metro, buses, walking and cycling all have important roles too.”
