Kynren strikes gold for conservation efforts

A North East visitor attraction has been recognised for its “outstanding” conservation work.

Kynren, the immersive live show in Bishop Auckland, has won Gold in the Conservation Projects category at this year’s Northumbria in Bloom Awards.

The accolade celebrates achievements in horticulture, environmental responsibility, and community participation, with judges praising the site’s “exceptionally high standard” and “consistent approach” to sustainability.

The awards, part of the UK-wide Britain in Bloom campaign run by the Royal Horticultural Society, highlighted Kynren’s extensive efforts to create habitats that support wildlife alongside its animals.

The site features grazing for horses, goats, sheep and geese, while public areas and the Viking village grow non-commercial plants that attract insects and provide materials for costume dyes.

Much of the work has been led by Mary Crosby, pictured below, whose passion for pollinators has seen thousands of insect-friendly plants introduced and bird, bat and owl boxes installed across the site.

These initiatives have encouraged biodiversity, with the team even discovering a colony of Adonis ladybirds thriving on the grounds.

Judges noted that Kynren offers more than just a wildlife-friendly environment, creating a landscape where both its show animals and wild species can flourish.

Anna Warnecke, chief executive of Kynren, said: “We are delighted to receive this Gold Award.

“It reflects the hard work and pride our teams and volunteers take in making sure the site is as inspiring by day as it is by night.

“Mary’s passion and the commitment of our gardeners have made the grounds a genuine sanctuary for both wildlife and visitors.”
