YMCA North Tyneside steps up support
A North East charity is expanding its services to help local communities.
YMCA North Tyneside has unveiled a new five-year strategy aimed at tackling rising child poverty, homelessness and cost-of-living pressures across the region.
The new strategy will see YMCA North Tyneside expand housing provision, create more training and employment opportunities for young people, as well as increase support to combat food poverty and poor health.
Officials say every penny of profit from its enterprises – including YMCA Gym, Day Nursery, Café 1879 and The Patterdale Estate – will be reinvested into these community programmes.
Steve Pugh, director of homes and places at YMCA North Tyneside, said: “Our vision is simple.
“We want to build an inclusive community where everyone has the chance to belong, grow and succeed.
“Poverty and housing challenges are at record highs, but by working together with partners and the public, we can ensure that young people and families across the North East have the support they need to thrive.”
Established in 1879, the charity is building on decades of work supporting vulnerable people, from safe housing and youth programmes to early years education and community meals.
Last year, YMCA North Tyneside reached more than 48,000 individuals through 346,745 interactions.
It provided supported housing to dozens of young people and adults with complex needs, while its outreach initiatives helped isolated residents access essential services.
The charity also served almost 1000 hot meals in North Shields, 654 senior lunches in Teesdale, and engaged with over 9000 children, young people and residents, supported by 800 volunteers contributing more than 8000 hours.
Karen Clark, elected mayor of North Tyneside, added: “YMCA North Tyneside is a lifeline for so many in our community, offering supported housing, vital support and opportunities for young people to thrive.
“Their work reflects our shared commitment to giving every child the best start in life, supporting families and building a fairer, healthier Borough for all.
“We’re proud to work alongside them to create lasting change across North Tyneside and the wider region.”
