Kip McGrath expands learning across North East
An education business which provides English and Maths tutoring for primary and secondary school students is opening a new hub in Washington.
Kip McGrath, a global tuition network celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, is expanding in Tyne and Wear with a new centre at Washington Library.
The move is led by Carol Milne, a former science teacher and head of year, who has already helped nearly 3000 children through her Gateshead East and Chester-Le-Street centres.
Carol opened her first centre in Gateshead in 2016 after leaving the classroom, followed by a second in Chester-Le-Street in 2021.
She says her new Washington centre aims to make high-quality tuition more accessible to local families while meeting growing demand from students already travelling from surrounding areas.
Carol said: “Opening in Washington means we can support even more families in the area.
“My aim has always been simple – to give children the chance to succeed and feel confident in their learning.
“To see the business grow from just me to a team of 30 teachers and staff is something I’m proud of.”
The centres provide lessons delivered by fully qualified, DBS-checked teachers using a traditional curriculum approach tailored to each child’s ability.
The focus extends beyond closing knowledge gaps to developing confidence, independence and resilience.
Over the past decade, Carol’s three centres have delivered more than 91,000 lessons, employing a team of 30 staff.
She added: “We help children from five to 18 for all sorts of reasons – some are behind their peers, some lack confidence and others are ahead but want to keep progressing.
“What parents tell us most often is the difference they see in their child’s confidence, which is often transformative.
“I’m passionate about making education accessible for all children, not just those from privileged backgrounds.
“Most of our families are working-class, and many parents make sacrifices to bring their children here because they know how important education is.”
Founded in Australia by two teachers tutoring children in their garage, Kip McGrath has grown to more than 800 centres worldwide, including locations in the UK, New Zealand, South Africa and the UAE.
