CF team climbs high for Teesside causes

A Teesside-based manufacturing business has raised thousands of pounds to support local mental health charities after completing a summer of community challenges and fundraising events.

Colleagues at CF Fertilisers’ Billingham Complex took on a rain-soaked Whitby to Saltburn trek, the gruelling Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and a community-focused summer event to raise money for Teesside Mind and The Headlight Project.

Together, the team raised £2445 for Teesside Mind, alongside an additional £500 donation to the Headlight Project, a local suicide-prevention charity.

The fundraising formed part of CF Fertilisers’ Inclusion Resource Group (IRG) Special Challenge – an initiative designed to strengthen links between the company and local communities while promoting wellbeing, teamwork and open conversations about mental health.

Julia Anderson, part of the IRG at CF Fertilisers, said: “We’re delighted to make this donation to the Headlight Project.

“As a business and IRG, we’re committed to supporting local charities and our local community.

“As we all have mental health, we recognise the importance and value of the work the Headlight Project team are doing to reduce the number of people losing their lives to suicide and support bereaved families on Teesside.”

Claire Pitt, fundraising manager at Teesside Mind, added: “We really can’t say thank you enough to everyone at CF Fertilisers who took on two challenges for us in horrible conditions.

“Every pound they’ve raised will stay right here in Teesside to help us support more local children, young people and adults, so that no one locally has to face a mental health problem alone.

“Their donation means we can provide another eleven local people each with a series of eleven 1-2-1 therapy sessions to help them on their journeys to recovery, and for that we’re incredibly grateful.”

With the North East continuing to face some of the highest suicide rates in the UK, CF Fertilisers has made mental health a clear priority, both within its workforce and the wider region.

The company regularly signposts employees to local charities, including Teesside Mind and the Headlight Project, and plans to deepen partnerships to deliver practical support and training in Billingham.

Alongside the walking challenges, CF also hosted a summer social at Billingham Synthonia Cricket Club’s Summer Bash, inviting the community to nominate a local cause for a £500 donation – ultimately awarded to the Headlight Project.

Michael Wooster, who is part of the senior leadership team at CF Fertilisers and took part in the challenge, added: “In choosing to walk for better mental health, our Special Challenge teams have not only raised important funds to support the work of Teesside Mind, but they’ve also helped raise vital awareness of where to turn to when life gets too much and you need some support, of the importance of talking about how you’re really feeling, and of how walking can benefit your mental wellbeing, even during a downpour!”
