Getting to know... Chris Worthington

In the latest instalment of Bdaily's Getting to know feature, which looks at the person behind the business profile, Chris Worthington, founder of Cause Matcher - which connects Yorkshire charities with local businesses and skilled volunteers - talks about his passion for helping good causes, the joy of family life and his musical prowess...

We know you as the founder of Cause Matcher, but who is the person behind the title? Tell us a little about what makes you tick...

As a huge family man, I made the decision pre-kids to engineer my work life so I had the flexibility to see and spend as much time with the family as possible.

I set up my own business, which gave me the flexibility to do this and allowed me to be the guy on the touchline on a rainy Monday in January watching my kids play sports before they grew up.

I’m ambitious, curious, an overthinker and somebody who is always challenging why something can’t be done differently.

Did you always want to work in the charity sector?

Yes. Although I am relatively new to it, it’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

I feel so passionate about helping charities and good causes, and setting up and running Cause Matcher has allowed me to do that.

What’s the best bit about your job? And the worst?

Seeing businesses matched with charities and the great work they do, plus the testimonials about how the Cause Matcher site has benefited both the company and the charity.

However, the ‘nos’ to working with me are sometimes hard to take and finding willing businesses and organisations to come on board and offer their time to help good causes in need can be tough. But it just drives me to keep going!

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

Having kids and being a dad – nothing comes close.

Workwise, setting up, building, growing and eventually selling a recruitment business.

And getting my Grade 8 exam on the trumpet too!

How do you relax outside of work?

Living near York, I still love spending time there; it really is one of the best cities in the UK.

Admiring the history, stumbling across streets I’ve never noticed before, then finishing off with great food and a couple of drinks in one of its great eateries is an ideal day for me.

What makes Yorkshire such a great place to live and work?

Some of Yorkshire’s cities are among the best in the UK.

The people, the coastlines, the history and the countryside make the region a fantastic place to live and work.

People might travel and leave the county for various reasons, but they will always end up coming back to Yorkshire.

Tell us something about you we didn’t know...

I used to play the trumpet, passing the top exam Grade 8 with a distinction.

I’ve played in various bands, and toured the UK, Spain and Switzerland many years ago!
