Visit Northumberland launches strategic boards
A tourism and marketing organisation has reformed to accelerate Northumberland’s tourism growth.
Visit Northumberland has welcomed new board members and launched two strategic boards to provide clear governance and strengthen the county’s visitor economy.
Officials say the changes reflect shifts in the national and regional visitor economy and introduce clear governance to support the Local Visitor Economy Partnership.
Firstly, the Northumberland Visitor Economy Board provides strategic oversight and direction, guiding the objectives of the Northumberland Destination Management Plan.
Chaired by Andrew Fox, it can include up to 20 representatives from the private sector and key stakeholders, alongside officer members from Northumberland County Council, with a focus on steering strategic growth and managing the county’s tourism offer.
Meanwhile, the Visit Northumberland Ltd Board has convened for the first time with three new members.
This board oversees legal, financial and governance responsibilities and monitors progress against the company’s annual operational delivery plan.
Andrew said: “This marks a significant milestone for Visit Northumberland.
“With both boards now in place and actively engaged, we are better positioned than ever to deliver on our ambitions for the county’s visitor economy.
“We are grateful to all past board members for their dedication and look forward to working with our new members who bring a wealth of expertise and passion for Northumberland.”
Councillor Glen Sanderson, leader of Northumberland County Council, added: “This partnership will bring together expertise from across the sector to shape our priorities, support sustainable growth and ensure that tourism continues to benefit our communities, businesses and visitors alike.
“Providing clear direction for Northumberland’s visitor economy, acting as a critical friend to the Council while championing and leading the sector’s agenda.
“By working collaboratively, we can build on our successes and create a strong foundation for the future of tourism in Northumberland.”
Tourism remains a critical part of Northumberland’s economy, with 10.46 million visitors generating over £1.4 billion in 2024 and supporting more than 14,500 jobs, which equates to a quarter of the county’s foundational workforce.
Funded by Northumberland County Council and around 350 private partners, Visit Northumberland acts as the official interface between the sector, the council and regional partners, representing the county locally, nationally and internationally.
