Contractor boosts order book with MRI hub work

A building contractor has boosted its order book with healthcare work.

G F Tomlinson is extending the University of Nottingham’s Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre.

Bosses say the project will create space to house “the UK’s most powerful MRI scanner” and bolster research into diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Set to be completed in early 2027, they add the venture will create a Magnet Hall – an iron-shielded space to contain the scanner’s magnetic field – as well as a control and equipment room, clinical spaces, waiting areas and welfare facilities.

The scheme has been developed by a team including the University of Nottingham; project manager EDGE; architect, principal designer and structural engineer William Saunders; mechanical and electrical engineers Mellor Bromley Mechanical and Morecroft Electrical; and cost consultant AtkinsRéalis.

Andy Sewards, group chair at Derby and Birmingham-based G F Tomlinson, said: “It’s a privilege to be supporting the University of Nottingham in delivering a facility that will have a lasting legacy in clinical research.

“The Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre extension will become a cornerstone of medical excellence in the UK.”

The scanning facility has received support from the UKRI Infrastructure Fund.

Professor Richard Bowtell, Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre director, added: “It’s a huge moment to see the building starting to take shape after months of meticulous planning.

“We’re extremely proud to be building on Sir Peter’s legacy, which started here with the invention of MRI in the 1970s.

“The new scanner is the next generation in technology and will provide a step-change in imaging research.”
