Council invests in safer high-rise living
A North East council is set to enhance safety and security for its multi-storey homes.
Gateshead Council has approved a £4.6 million investment in modernising its high-rise properties as part of a broader £358 million housing improvement plan over the next five years.
The initiative aims to ensure tenants feel safe, supported and proud of where they live, while upgrades include two-way communication units in every flat.
These link directly to a new 24/7 concierge service, allowing residents to request help, manage visitors, or report issues such as anti-social behaviour or noise at the touch of a button.
High-definition CCTV cameras will be installed across communal areas, alongside manual call points for instant access to concierge staff.
A new secure fob system for door entry will restrict access to residents and approved visitors, with fobs quickly deactivated if lost or stolen.
Digital noticeboards will provide up-to-date general and site-specific information remotely.
Work began in September 2025 and is scheduled to continue until 2027, with careful planning to minimise disruption for residents.
Councillor Chris Buckley, cabinet member for housing, said: “The wellbeing of our tenants is a top priority.
“That’s why we’re introducing modern technology and services that will not only improve safety but also make day-to-day living more convenient.
“We want all of our tenants to feel safe and supported in their homes.
“These new systems will not only give people greater peace of mind but also make it easier to raise concerns and get help when it’s needed.
“This is a major investment in our communities, and part of a bigger programme of improvements we’re making to keep our homes secure, well-managed and good places to live.”
Andrew Foster, managing director of North, the contractor that is carrying out the installation, added: “We are proud to be supporting Gateshead Council with this groundbreaking project.
“The investment in innovative integrated technologies coupled with a wide-ranging programme of sustainability and social value initiatives will support the council with re-shaping communities that are safer, future-proofed and create places that residents are proud to call home.”
The programme builds on other improvements already underway, including new fire and access doors, extensive painting and upgraded kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems where required.
