Lumo on track for smoother journeys

A rail operator has completed a full fleet upgrade aimed at enhancing comfort and sustainability for passengers.

Newcastle-headquartered Lumo, the all-electric train company connecting London, Edinburgh and the North East, has refreshed all 1,930 seats across its five Hitachi-built trains.

The upgrade comes ahead of the operator’s extended route to Glasgow Queen Street, launching in December with advance tickets from £33.90 when booked directly.

The refurbished seats feature brighter, more durable fabric while retaining Lumo’s signature electric blue design.

Passengers will continue to enjoy features including generous legroom, winged headrests, large tray tables and individual table lights – all designed to improve the on-board experience.

Now in its fifth year, Lumo has helped generate 1.4 million additional journeys annually, offering a low-cost, low-carbon alternative to air or car travel.

Its electric trains are 95 per cent more environmentally friendly than equivalent flights, while the company was recently recognised with the Institute of Customer Service’s ServiceMark Accreditation for excellence and improvement.

The refurbishment was completed in Scotland with the support of a network of local suppliers and partners.

Jen Clare, service delivery director at Lumo, said: “Completing this seat upgrade across our fleet is a significant step in enhancing the onboard experience for our customers, ahead of our Glasgow service launching this December.

“It reflects our ongoing investment in comfort and sustainability and demonstrates our ambition to make rail travel the preferred choice for more people.”
