The North East Regional Defence and Security Cluster (NERDSC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Ranson as its new Chair
The North East Regional Defence and Security Cluster (NERDSC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Andy Ranson of Leonardo as its new Chair.
Andy brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and regional insight to the role, having played a pivotal part in expanding Leonardo’s presence in the North East. Passionate about driving growth and innovation, Andy is committed to showcasing the region’s capabilities within one of the UK’s most rewarding and technologically advanced sectors, defence.
With a background in software development and a strong interest in technological innovation, Andy has dedicated his career to fostering collaboration and excellence. His professional journey includes roles with several major defence primes and organisations across the North East, giving him a deep understanding of the sector’s potential and challenges.
As a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, Andy is recognised for his commitment to leadership and professional development. His appointment reflects NERDSC’s mission to strengthen the North East’s defence and security ecosystem and to build on the region’s growing reputation for innovation, expertise, and industry collaboration.
Professor Simon Harwood, UK Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Leonardo said:
“Leonardo was one of the first companies to join the North East Regional Defence and Security Cluster, rapidly expanding its new site in Newcastle to employ at least 200 people in high-value science, engineering and data roles.
“We thoroughly believe in NERDSC’s vision and are committed to helping make the North East a powerhouse within the defence and security sector, engaging with local groups, SMEs, and academia to spark innovation, open new opportunities, and attract new investment.”
Andy Ranson, Strategic Initiatives Manager (North East), Leonardo said:
“As one of the first engineers to join the Leonardo Newcastle office, I’ve been privileged to help the site’s growth in the region. On a personal level, I have greatly valued the opportunity to support NERDSC by representing Leonardo on the steering group, and to now lead it - driving our vision for a connected, forward-thinking defence community in the region.
“Having previously worked for a defence prime I came back to the region, with my family, knowing it was a sleeping giant that was on the verge of bringing amazing opportunities to the sector. I am happy to see that instinct has paid off, and I now have a leading role to play in moulding it for the future.”
NERDSC exists to bring together industry, academia, and government partners to drive collaboration, innovation, and investment in the North East’s defence and security sector. The cluster continues to grow its impact and reach, helping to connect organisations and accelerate innovation across the region. Andy’s appointment marks the next stage in NERDSC’s development as it continues to strengthen the region’s position on the national and global stage.
