Work begins on Burnhope housing scheme
A new housing development in County Durham is set to provide dozens of affordable homes.
Durham County Council has started work on 32 new council homes in Burnhope as part of its wider plan to deliver hundreds of new properties across the county over the next five years.
The Greenwood Avenue scheme, which is being built in partnership with local contractor T. Manners & Sons, will feature a mix of two-bedroom bungalows and two, three and four-bedroom houses designed to suit families, couples and older residents.
Groundworks are now underway, with completion expected in autumn 2026.
All homes will be built to high energy-efficiency standards to help tenants lower bills and reduce their carbon footprint.
The designs also incorporate accessibility and flexibility features to adapt to residents’ changing needs over time.
Councillor Joe Quinn, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for resources, investments and assets, said: “The Greenwood Avenue development at Burnhope is another clear example of how we are investing in the long-term future of our communities.
“By increasing the supply of affordable council housing, we are addressing local housing need, supporting inclusive growth, and ensuring residents benefit from secure, sustainable homes as part of our wider regeneration priorities.”
Backed by £7.5 million in funding from Homes England’s Affordable Homes Programme and the Brownfield Land Release Fund, the project is the second partnership between the council and T. Manners, following a development in Seaham.
Simon Manners, managing director of T Manners & Sons, added: “We are really pleased to have started on our second new development for Durham County Council.
“The scheme will see 32 new homes built but will deliver so much more within the local community, including supporting the development of future talent in the area, working with schools, spending locally with suppliers and supporting community projects.”
The homes will be advertised through Durham Key Options, with a local lettings policy giving priority to people with ties to the Burnhope area.
