'Generational' 2500-home scheme moves forward
A “generational” 2500-home project “to transform a city” has taken a step forward, development bosses have said.
Homes England has launched a search to find a private sector partner to deliver Newcastle’s Forth Yards scheme.
Overlooking the River Tyne, they say the venture will create a “thriving community with great transport links, access to jobs, green spaces and shops”.
They add a development contract is expected to be awarded in October next year.
The update builds on £121.8 million Government backing for the project, which will be used to carry out site remediation, groundworks and infrastructure upgrades.
It also comes after Homes England bought the largest parcel of land at Forth Yards, known as Quayside West, which has capacity for around 1100 homes.
Councillor Karen Kilgour, leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “This is a generational opportunity to transform our city, bring growth to the region and help address the shortage of much-needed housing that towns and cities across the country are facing.
“The securing of a development partner will be a hugely exciting milestone that brings us ever closer to the point of seeing work taking place on site.”

Pat Ritchie, Homes England chair, added: “Forth Yards offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of Newcastle, bringing new life to a part of the city with huge potential.
“In close partnership with Newcastle City Council, the North East Combined Authority, Network Rail and our future partner, we will create a vibrant new neighbourhood that reflects the ambition of the city and offers a place people are proud to call home.”
