MPI sparks metals innovation boost
A Teesside-based research institute is set to drive innovation and decarbonisation in the UK metals sector.
The Materials Processing Institute (MPI) has secured £1.86 million in funding from Innovate UK to continue leading the PRISM programme, a national initiative supporting research, productivity and sustainability in steel and metals.
Launched in 2020, the £18 million PRISM programme has delivered investment in new research centres and advanced equipment, supporting the commercialisation of technologies across the sector.
MPI will use the additional funding to expand projects focused on measurable carbon reductions, cost savings and innovation-led growth.
Key initiatives include enhancing steelmaking capabilities through MPI’s seven-tonne Electric Arc Furnace, developing low-carbon cement alternatives to traditional slag, applying AI and machine learning to optimise industrial processes, as well as advancing critical materials recovery to secure UK mineral supplies.
Chris Oswin, chief executive at MPI, said: “This new round of funding enables the UK metals sector to continue delivering innovation to help shape its future.
“Investment in research, development and innovation means that we are uniquely positioned to lead on breakthrough technologies to improve materials, raise productivity, and develop new production routes, while supporting environmental sustainability and decarbonisation.”
PRISM has already driven significant innovation, including a hydrogen demonstration facility for low-carbon steel production, Industry 4.0 digital transformation at MPI’s Normanton Steel Plant and research into sustainable cement using industrial by-products.
The programme also supports next-generation materials development through powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing, reinforcing the circular economy.
