Baker turns setback into sweet success
A Gateshead-based home bakery is rising to new heights after a local woman turned redundancy into opportunity.
Lindsey Clark, who spent more than 25 years at Thorntons, launched Heritage Cupcakes from her kitchen table in September 2022.
What started as a few homemade cupcakes has grown into a thriving business creating celebration cakes, bespoke wedding designs, giant cookies and seasonal bakes, all known for their personal touch and signature pastel colours.
Lindsey said: “Baking became my therapy.
“It gave me purpose and peace when I needed it most.
“I started sharing photos of my bakes online, and before I knew it, people were asking to order them.”
Heritage Cupcakes operates as a family affair, with Lindsey’s husband Lee helping with deliveries and stock runs, while her son – working as a fine dining chef in Bermuda – remains a source of inspiration.
“His drive keeps me motivated,” Lindsey added.
“You get out what you put in.”
The business has earned a five-star food hygiene rating from Gateshead Council and continues to expand its customer base through social media and strong local support.
Beyond baking, Lindsey supports her community through fundraising and charity initiatives, donating vouchers and cookies to local causes, while continuing to bring joy to customers across the North East.
Lindsey added: “Being part of that community has been such a big part of my growth.
“Running a business from home can be overwhelming, but knowing you’re not doing it alone makes all the difference.
“I still get that same buzz every time someone chooses one of my cakes for a celebration.
“It’s proof that something positive can grow from a difficult time.”
