Airport earns top accessibility award
A North-East airport has secured international recognition for improving services for all passengers.
Newcastle Airport has become only the second UK airport to receive Level 1 Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation from Airports Council International.
The award highlights the airport’s commitment to making travel more accessible and its efficient passenger assistance services.
In the past year, Newcastle Airport’s passenger assistance team supported 93,863 travellers, a 22 per cent increase on the previous year.
The airport has invested around £2 million over two years to enhance accessibility, including the introduction of electric vehicles to help passengers board and disembark safely and the creation of dedicated access routes throughout the terminal.
Additional staff have also been recruited to manage growing passenger numbers.
Dean Ward, director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, said: “Making Newcastle Airport safe, welcoming and accessible for all our passengers is our top priority so we are delighted to receive this accreditation from the Airports Council International.
“Being only the second UK airport to achieve this reflects the high quality of our services and the hard work and dedication of our teams, who go above and beyond to deliver the best possible experience for everyone travelling through the airport.”
The latest recognition follows the airport receiving a ‘Very Good’ rating from the Civil Aviation Authority for the fourth consecutive year in June – the highest rating awarded for passenger assistance services.
